Dispute an application or police check result

What if the information recorded on my National Police History Check (NPHC) is incorrect?

If you believe the information recorded on your NPHC is incorrect, for example, the information doesn’t relate to you or it does but it’s incorrect, you may dispute all or part of it.  To do this, you must contact us within 28 days of receiving your NPHC and advise us that you would like a dispute to be lodged on your behalf.

You’ll be asked to provide as much information as possible, including details of the information you’re disputing. We’ll then advise the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) and they’ll arrange for the relevant police agency to investigate your dispute.

ACIC will advise us of the outcome of the investigation once it’s completed. We’ll then notify you in writing of the results.

You should not lodge a dispute if you disagree with a court's finding of guilt or the sentence imposed. Neither we or ACIC have authority to review these matters.

What if I disagree with the outcome of the initial investigation regarding my NPHC?

If you’ve disputed the information on your NPHC, and you still disagree with the outcome and the information on your NPHC, you’ll need to notify us (in writing).

We’ll notify ACIC of your response.  ACIC will then arrange for the relevant police agency to conduct a further investigation. ACIC will advise us of the investigation’s outcome once it’s completed. We will then notify you in writing of the result.

What is ACIC?

The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) is a government agency responsible for criminal history record checking in Australia.

We have a contract with ACIC which allows us, with the proper consent, to submit a request for a NPHC for an individual who is applying for accreditation to become a commercial passenger vehicle driver or booking service provider under the Commercial Passenger Vehicle Industry Act 2017 and related Regulations or a driving instructor authority under the Road Safety Act 1986 and related Regulations.
