You Make The Difference

Changing the way we move people with disability

The experience for people with accessibility needs in consumer passenger vehicles is not consistent with the experience of people without those needs.  That is why this International Day of People with Disability (3 December 2021), CPVV is launching 3-month disability awareness campaign called ‘You Make The Difference.’

What is this campaign about?

When you have a disability, travelling via train, tram or bus can be challenging for several reasons. This means, commercial passenger vehicles are an essential means of getting to work, seeing friends and family, and travelling to medical appointments.

However, according to the CPVV State of the Industry Report on Accessibility, more than one in ten passengers have been refused service due to disability, and more than one in five have felt unsafe in a CPV.

At CPVV, we are committed to providing accessible transport for all. We believe that the journey is just as important as the destination – and drivers have the ability to make the difference in this area.

What is involved in this campaign?

The message ‘You Make The Difference’ is at the heart of this campaign – we want to remind drivers  that your  service has the ability to make or break someone’s day.

Over the next three months, CPVV will be launching several videos, podcasts, and educational resources that will seek to raise awareness of the issues faced by people with a disability or mobility impairment when travelling in a CPV, and highlight ways that drivers can therefore provide greater service to this community.

As a CPV driver, you have the power to help your community; the power to put a smile on your passengers’ faces; the power to make a difference.

Tennis Gold Medallist and Paraplegic, Heath Davidson, shares with us how drivers can make the difference in this ‘You Can’t Ask That’ video

Writer, speaker and appearance activist, Carly Findlay, explains just how drivers can make a difference for passengers with a disability.

For Anja and her assistance animal, Kyla, being refused service in a taxi or rideshare is something they’ve experienced many times before. Sometimes it’s because drivers don’t want a dog in their car. Other times it’s because Anja’s disability isn’t visible.

There are so many ways that drivers can make the difference for passengers with a disability, like Tricia Malowney OAM describes in this video...

When passengers have a great journey in their CPV, it shows. And this rings particularly true for these passengers - the Artists of QArt.

We go behind the wheel to hear stories from passengers with a disability as they chat to their drivers.

DOs and DON’Ts

At CPVV, we are committed to providing accessible transport for all. And a lot of the time, the journey is just as important as the destination.

As a CPV driver, you have the ability to make a difference by allowing people with disability to take part in activities that are important to their lives.

So, keep these things in mind when transporting a passenger with disability…
